For Christmas I have only all my gifts ready, I just need my dad‘s.
He likes practical things that he can use, or he likes things that mean something to him-i.e., a photo of our family done nice, etc.
I want to give him something(s) creative. Something cool that will be practical/fun/cool/personalized to what he wants.
So what should I get him?
Thanks!
Good idea with the digital frame. However, I gave that to my mom and I don’t really feel like giving the exact same gift to him.
i also am going for the practical items with him. so ideas for that would be good.

A digital keychain: He can take a picture of someone and keep it on his keychain.

If your looking for something for the day the baby is born you could get something from a place like things remembered. Like a frame or something and get his name and the baby’s name engraved on it so you can put their very first photo in it after you get home.. They have a lot of nice things there you could start there.. Good Luck

Ear plugs fo him? I think the basket for Kelly yis lovely, if you’re buying for thebaby then toiletries is always good as you know they’ll get used, if you’re buying clothes buy them a little big, lots of ppl buy tiny babyy clothes, they wear them for 3 months, then have nothing else! A bottle of champagne/ spirit for the dad to celebrate with, maybe a photo frame he can put a baby picture in to take to work if that’s his sor tof thing, a voucher for a golf trip or something so he has a good excuse to spend a few hours out thhe house, I always struggle buying for men. Sounds like a great idea, though, have fun giving baby Braydon lots of cuddles!

I love someone else’s idea of cooking a meal for them, if you know they don’t have plans for tea you could just turn up with all the stuff and tell them to go sit gaze lovingly at their gorgeous baby while you go whip them up a great dinner!

Hi! I am spending this Christmas Eve with my boyfriend’s family. Does anybody have ideas for what to get them?

I am in college so I am working on a budget. I want the gifts to be something small and thoughtful. His family includes his dad, mom and older brother. His brother’s gf is also going to be there this year. Am I supposed to get her something? I’ve met her once when I was visiting them in NY (with my bf) and spent a night in the studio she shares with his brother. For his brother, I have no idea what to get him. My bf tells me that he’s picky and doesn’t like things that take up space so to be wary of getting him an object unless I know for sure he wants it. Is it weird to maybe get them a personalized couples ornament? I plan on getting a $15 gift certificate to a nail salon for his mom because she likes pedicures. I don’t know what to get his dad. He likes sailing, biking and photography but I have a feeling he has everything he needs for those hobbies. Thanks for the help!

Hey I don’t think that you have to get anything for her. I wouldn’t. To me if you did it would seem like your trying to hard. I would stick with the ornament idea…maybe even make it yourself. You can never go wrong with a Christmas ornament! As for his dad I just asked my boyfriend what kind of stuff his dad is into and went from there. If he likes outdoorsy stuff then maybe some type of cooler. They have some really neat new stuff online like self cooling wine carriers and small travel totes for labtops and stuff. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Christmas gift for parents? about $20?

My sister and I always get my parents a $50 giftcard to a restaurant for christmas, because we dont get to go out to dinner that often and its a nice treat.

We also get our parents a small present from us individually, on our own, for about $20. Just something little… for example, last year I bought them a personalized ornament that said “Mom & Dad, We Love You! 2009″

This year, it’s going to be more difficult because I cannot get to the mall (sister isn’t coming home from colelge until a day before christmas, and I can’t drive, and I dont have time to go to the mall anyway)

So I’m going to have to resort to shopping at either CVS or Walgreens :/
I’m sure I can still find something nice to give them, whether its one $20 thing or a bunch of little things. Any ideas? Thanks!

wedding gift for Dad’s 3rd wedding?

My dad is getting married for the 3rd time to a woman that he just met 2 months ago. This is her 3rd marriage also. Obviously, I don’t know her well, but I have been to her house, and she is a complete pack rat! There are atleast 20 picture frames on each flat surface and her kitchen has items stored on the counters, so anything for the house is definately not an option. My dad could use some new clothes, but she has an overabundance. I don’t think it would be very nice to just buy something for him (even though that’s really what I want to do). The wedding is in a few months, so I do still have some time. What should I get them?

You are a precious daughter to be worrying so much about your gift. I would do them a “honeymoon” basket. Get a basket and fill it with all kinds of goodies. If they drink, a bottle of nice wine or champainge with two glasses. Candles, chocolates, cheese and crackers.

You can spend a fortune or you can do the dollar tree thing. But add some candles, bubble baths, and pretty soaps. It’s something “special” for their wedding night, and it’s a perfect gift for couples, whom have everything.

If they are going on a honeymoon, you could give them a pretty photo album to hold their pictures. I know you want something special, and it will be because it’s from you! I promise, anything that my children give is “wonderful” because they gave it to me with love. So, sweetie choose a gift from the heart, it could be matching t-shirts with Mr. And Mrs.______ on them. That’s cute, and easily done. Promise whatever you decide it’s going to “wonderful”!

God bless us all……………………..

That’s a thoughtful idea, make them a large care package with all the cool things from home ( bake cookies, find traditional foods and beverages)..
Also, Find out if and where they are going on honeymoon, and see if you can prepay for a gift for while they there ( a free dinner, or scuba lesson, couple’s massage..)

Whats an appropriate wedding gift for Dad?

My dad is getting remarried this weekend and I am unsure if a $300 gift is enough. The wedding is out of town and I need to stay overnight for two nights. I paid for my room the first night, but my dad is paying for the second night. I feel guilty that he is paying for my room on HIS wedding night, but I just cant afford it. (I didn’t ask, he just paid it) I did spend $250 on the shower and that is not including the $150 shower gift I gave. My dad is living comfortably and I feel like $300 is nothing compared to what he is spending and makes. (and technically since he is paying for my $100 room, I am really only giving a $200 gift) I live on my own, which is why I’m so broke. The guilt that he is paying for my room is really getting to me.
I agree with all answers, they were helpful and I feel better. However, where I come from, you never give a actually “gift” for the wedding. Its always money. Paying for your plate, helping with wedding expenses. The physical gift is given at the shower. THats why I was worried if $300 was enough. Most people I know whould give that to a friend. (And I know I should worry about what others give)

I envy you this problem. I never knew what to get my Dad. Now, I’ll never have this problem again. He died 4 years ago not long after my birthday.

The things I WISH I had gotten him all have something to do with more time together and talking and making contact more. How about an invitation, with a pic of you inside, inviting him to take you “hunting”. You could provide some hot cocoa, and think up ahead of time a list of things you want to talk to him about before you no longer have the chance. : ) God Bless, and have a GREAT day with your Dad.

As we dont have a chimney we obviously had to tell another story, and we have special father chrismas key (purchased from a very good card shop) and we hang it by the fire place and a fairy comes in to get in which then lets father christmas through the door.
House sale proceeds a gift from Dad to son…taxes?

My father paid $35,000 for a house in Illinois in 1970. He will sell that house in 2010 or early 2011 for $40,000. He plans to give the $40,000 proceeds to me, his son, as a gift. What tax scenario is likely to result in the least taxes being taken out of this gift? I assume he will pay long term capital gains taxes of ?% on the $5,000 profit he earned over the purchase price of 35K….will he then be able to gift me the remaining amount of cash without paying a gift tax? Will I be expected to report this as income and pay income taxes? Is there anything else I have overlooked?
As far as him living in or renting the house….he has been allowing me to live there rent free. I do pay the property taxes and homeowners insurance, about $300 a month.
He lived there from 1970 until 2006. The house was vacant until I moved there in Summer 2009 and I live there still.

PD Staff Answers:

If this is your father’s principal residence, he will owe no federal income taxes. That is likely to be the same result at the state level, but you should consult a tax accountant or lawyer in order to get the right answer. If this is an investment property, then your father will pay federal and state income taxes at the capital gains tax rate on any gain. Remember your father’s cost basis for income tax purposes is the original purchase price plus the cost of all improvements (repairs are not improvements) plus any depreciation recapture tax, if any, on your father’s gain.

As for gifting, if he intends to make a gift this year he should limit it to $13,000. He should give you a check for that amount and mark it clearly as a gift for 2010 and you should deposit it into an account under your sole control before year end. Your father can do the same for 2011, or he can gift the entire balance to you in 2011. If his gifts to you exceed $13,000, then he will be legally required to file a gift tax return with the IRS that discloses a gift of $27,000 to you in 2011. Your father will either have his unified gift and estate tax reduced or he will have to pay a gift tax to the federal government if he has surpassed the total exemption available to him and his estate.

I would suggest that you take an hour or two and speak to a competent tax accountant or tax lawyer just to make sure that you get the income tax consequences of the sale right and the gift tax timing of the $40,000 gift worked out.

Your father’s gift of $40,000 to you is not considered income for federal tax purposes. I suspect this is also true at the state level, but you need to confirm that that is the case. If you want certainty, then speak to a good tax accountant or tax lawyer.

Good luck.

I would like advice: My daughter was born in 2001 I am the Dad, at the time I was in the Army until 2003.?

Shortly after her mom and I divorced. The whole divorce was in Nebraska court. A child visition was ordered so I could see my daughter every other weekend some holidays. I moved to Iowa on the border of Nebraska and spent several years seeing my daughter. I then found work in Yellowstone national park in Wyoming where children were not allowed to stay for long periods. I pay child support and have only been behind a couple times but always catch up. I wrote a few letters and postcards and always send gifts on holidays. I talk to my daughter on the phone every so often but it is limited because her mom is mean to me. I married an amazing Chrisitan woman who has just gradutated college and one month ago in 2011 we moved to the Oregon coast to live closer to my Dad and his wife. I have been able to visit my daughter twice at two different Christmas’ over the past many years but her mom refuses to let her come visit me… My daughter is nine, what are my rights as a dad, how can I get summer visitation enforced by law and have my daughter come visit and stay with me… The mom has custody of the my daughter right now… Can you help me on this subject?

PD Staff Answers:

Two things come to mind here.

First, if your ex is refusing you visitation time when it is scheduled by court order then she may be in contempt of the court order. But you really should speak to a licensed attorney about this as strategically it might play against you since you have moved so far away and have had limited contact on your allowed visitation times for several years now.

You should really seek out an attorney in Nebraska to help you modify your visitation agreement and work to have it enforced. There really is no other way to ensure that you are legally covered in this circumstance. While you are modifying your visitation agreement, you might propose to the court a modification in the custody arrangement as well. However, this might be very difficult for you to obtain as you have not been very active in your child’s life for a few years. Courts will not look favorably upon this, regardless of circumstances. Every little thing you do, even the phone calls, are important here.

Start calling more, attempt to be a more active part of your child’s life, and document everything thing you do. Even if them other refuses to let you see or speak to your child, do it anyway and document the results. The more active you are in your child’s life the better things will go for you in regards to this matter, even if you are blocked from doing so.

You might want to spend some time on DadsDivorce.com researching articles, videos and Ask a Lawyer question and answer’s in regards to modifications, custody and visitation agreements. There is also a forum section where you can chat with other guys that might have experienced similar situations as yours to see what they would suggest. There is also a Resource section where you can search for attorneys in Nebraska.
