It might be a great idea if you make hima book with photos of your favourite moments with him, almost like a scrap book of just dad, it can be of pics wiwth just him doing his favourtie things or it can be the whole family but mainly pics of him with someone else and you can write little captions next to them, or write where it was and what you were doing in the pics, that means a whole lot more because photographs are for life and he can look back at the book adn think that you took teh time out to capture all his favourite moments and put them together for him to look at when you all leave the house and go to college, it will be his memory because we all know that men do not generally like ot look at photo albums but this is a book about dad…i made on eofr my husbadn with just pictures of himadn our daughter adn he is away from home alot, he is in the army and whereever he goes he takes that book with hiim to show others his daughter and just to haev with him everyday to know that she misses him

Fathers Day Dad freakout…help?

Well I’m sitting alone in my room now because my dad freaked out on me. Umm basically what happened was my dad just got done shopping with my mother and my mom called up and asked if I need some bolts for my car and I said sure thank you and I told my dad happy fathers day. Well when they got home I was playing a videogame for a moment and I’ve been playing them alot since I was 12. My dad came and screamed up the stairs saying hey what are you doing. I said playing a video game. My dad says how long till your down. I said like 10 mins. He said why. I said I’m finishing something up. Well then he was freaking out downstairs apparently and I was down in 5 mins cause my game finished early and my dad was like your game finally done? and I was like yea. He started being a jerk to me then and treating me like a dog And I toledm dad stop being so mean. Well then after saying im not going to take your crap I walked in side and he was telling me now you can be on your own dont ask me for anything because your not going to treat me like a dog. and he told my mom shes not to help me with anything or hes done with her too. So I’m in a pickle here I dont know what to do now im not allowed to even eat family food in the house anymore. Please tell me why my dad is being like this on fathers day and what I should do.
In addition, or in place of any gift, make a list of the reasons why you appreciate him. Perhaps have it inscribed on a wall plague.

Please don’t get a joke card. In my 20+ years of working with fathers, it has been rare that a joke card that makes fun of his abilities is really appreciated.

I wrote this to “Dear Abby” for Father’s Day, March 19, 2005.

APPRECIATION FOR JOB WELL DONE IS WHAT FATHERS WANT TO HEAR

DEAR ABBY: Today is Father’s Day, so why don’t we try to do more for dear old Dad than give him the usual greeting card that promotes the idea that all dads are imbeciles, followed by a collect call to see what he thought of the card. (Father’s Day is the day when the most collect calls are made.)

We should treat our fathers the way we treat our mothers on Mother’s Day and show them we appreciate them for being there. Yes, you probably tell your father all the time that you love him, but the minds of men work differently. Anyone can say “I love you,” but as men, knowing that we are appreciated for a job well done is what really gets us teary-eyed.

Something else you can do — especially you sons out there (but daughters can do it, too) — is to make sure Dad has been to the doctor for a checkup, including depression screening. This can go a long way toward making sure he’s here on Father’s Day next year.

I wasn’t raised by my father, but by a stepfather. Although we did not see eye-to-eye on many things, I would not be the person I am today if it were not for him. This man, who spent years climbing on top of heavy construction equipment to prepare the ground for many of the homes, businesses, roads and highways of Southern California, now finds it difficult to get into a car. Although none of the houses or roads have his name on them, they are all testaments to his life and the lives of men like him.

So today, let’s do something extra for Dad, without him pulling out his wallet to pay for it. — George McCasland, Overland Park, Kansas

***************************************************************
Remember, there’s a lot of us fathers sitting in nursing homes whose children live too far away to visit. Contact an activities director about volunteering Sunday morning. Read a list out loud about why you appreciated your father.

I can have up to 2 lines with the first line being 18 characters and the 2nd line being 15 characters. Since this will be from our son, I was thinking something with Dad or Daddy would be nice. I’m just having trouble coming up with something short and clever. We did both go to Texas Tech and the apron is black and red (their colors). So anything with Red Raiders would be okay too.

I’ve been with my guy for a fairly decent length of time now. I get on with his family great, they’re fantastic. I don’t get along so well with my own family, and don’t buy presents for anyone but my parents and my children (and my guy of course). So this year I was thinking, since his family have been so good to me, that I should get them a little something. Would it be a good idea to make some personalised gift baskets? His sister is about to have a baby, so I was thinking a pamper/beauty basket for her to make her feel good after the pregnancy. His parents (especially his dad) love wine (not alcoholics, just appreciate good wine), so I was thinking of getting 2 wine glasses personalised with their names and presenting them in a bucket with a nice bottle of wine? His brother loves movies so I was thinking a gift card for our local cinemas, some microwave popcorn, soda cans and a dvd. His young neice is a huge Justin Beiber fan, but I’ve already bought her his new book.

Do you think this would be ok? Or is it too impersonal/cheap? I really want to show them how much I’ve appreciated them.

What gift should I get for my step-daughters birthday?! SHE IS TURNING 11!!!?

Hello. We are deciding on a gift for my step-daughters birthday. It is on Valentines Day, But last year we celebrated it on the 15th, the year we are celebrating it on the 13th. She is turning 11. We are celebrating her birthday in San Fransisco. One reason is because I am seeing my family. Another is because we are already getting her a puppy and the breeders live close by. And it is her birthday. We want you to choose 2 gifts from this list, what we should get for her. For Christmas, she got uggs, IPod Touch, A bike and some craft kits. We spoiled her that time, but we are not anymore. We dont want to spoil her. We also are going to San Fransisco and we want you to suggest some activities we can do up there from Feb 10 to Feb 16. Thank you! Here is the list:

DSI: She got a DS 2 years ago. She is out of that phase. She said it has a camera, I told her she has a camera and she can borrow her Dads flip camera or camcorder anytime. I told her she has a DS, too.

Scooter: She has a bike, but she would also like a scooter. I found one that is $100 and it is fancy. It use to be $250.00. It is not electric, just the normal one.

Cell Phone: She wants a Cell Phone. She wants a IPhone or an LG. I told her no to the IPhone, because it is a run for money and she has a ITouch, which is pretty similar. I told her maybe to the LG. I can trust her with it, because she uses a “training phone”, she has since June and you can text and do anything, for free. After checking the “Bill” It is not that much for an LG. $35.00 a month,if it were an LG, it is free. She is tired of that phone because it is kind of retarded, you know?

Laptop: She wants a laptop. She has had permission on the computer since age 3, and I monitor everything. I told her not what to do, and the laptop I maybe buying would text my phone telling me what website she visited and how many times she did, weekly. That laptop lasts and it deletes things that are not good. She wants a FaceBook because she claims all of her friends have one, but I told her maybe. She also wants a Twitter and I said that may be yes. She said she wants a MySpace and I said, no. I trust her and she has two emails. One for important stuff and one for entertainment stuff.

Converse: She has like plenty pairs of converse, uggs and crocs and now she is asking for another pair of shoes. She wants brown converse, I said no because the pair is $75 and she has brownish blackish converse. I said NO, again, because she still fits fine in ALL of her shoes. I dont know if I should or not. It is her birthday.

I also want things you can do on a Saturday and please tell me the best restaurunts down there that are family friendly, cheap and where walk ins are allowed. Yes, it is all a surprise, execpt the trip. Thank you <3
Halo Mom- I know that show- Little People Big World. That episode, I watched it. It was sad when Jacob had to give it up… I agree with the pre paid, I will get that covered
I heard a family got into debt for buying IPhones for each member of the family. They are still paying it off.

Ok My daughter loves all those things and has those things cause she is spoiled..(DO NOT SPOIL UR KIDS THEY TURN INTO BRATS just kidding) I would go for The cell phone, unlimted texting, too because kids run the bill up 2 $400 dollars on texting(my daughter did that) (My child got the LG because the Iphone MAKES YOUR BUY UNLIMTED DATA CHARGES so they would go on the internet! So I said no to the iphone and I got her the LG) I also, would get her a $110 camera with a cell phone but I would get her a cellphone and a camera because, she has a ds and she wants a dsi but its more expensive and she cant use the old gameboy games on the dsi so get her simply a Digital Camera because Cameras are cheaper than DSI’s and get her a LG cell phone

Asked not to attend BF’s daughter’s birthday party due to exwife and her family attending?

Been dating a great guy – or so I thought – for a few months. We are both in our 40s. We have daughters the same age and they attend the same elementary school. That is how we met. Very nice and natural. However, with his daughter‘s birthday coming soon, it all came out from him that he thought it was best that I did not attend her party. There is also 5-8 little girls from their school coming too so it is not just all about the ex’s family and her being there. He told me point blank that he was afraid that the ex would either have an attitude with me being there or I would make the situation uncomfortable for her or be uncomfortable myself. He said he didn’t want any drama during the party that would take away from the daughter. I told him he knew I was not that kind of person and he agreed but didn’t know what would happen. A couple of times the ex and I have crossed paths at the BFs home. There wasn’t much to say and nothing much was said. I know that one of the first times she ran into me at the house, she just walked in the door to pick her daughter up for visitation unannounced and I was standing in the kitchen in his bathrobe making coffee. We have had a great time and relationship up until now. My kids and his would all get together for weekends, cookouts, dinners, etc. Just a wonderful time. Suddenly, the first “family event” and he is what I feel, wanting me to take a hike. He had asked me to come over after the party for dinner with him and his kids and bring his daughter‘s bday gift to avoid any possible problem with his daughter‘s mother. This little girl I have grown to be fond of. I bring her home with my kids after school somedays when her Dad is working and she has no supervision from her college age sisters . I have included her in some of our outings, meals, and occasions. I even took her treat or treating with my kids and helped her get a costume together as no one in her family seemed able to interested to help. A little background on the ex and my bf’s former marriage – the ex is domineering and controlling…the bf a very kind and unconfrontational type of man who is always wanting to please and avoid conflict. He obviously had been so henpecked in his marriage it wasn’t funny. We all know who wore the pants and cracked the whip and he was the first to admit it himself. Things I think are happening….1) The ex has told him not to have me at the party 2) My BF has decided himself I should not come to the party because he is afraid of a drama from the ex toward me 3)My BF is wanting to protect me from the ex and her possibly offending me/insulting me. What do the Yahoo Answers think is going on and how should I handle this…The relationship may be over because of the BF’s actions.
Just to clarify – there is no separate childrens portion or separate adult portion of the party. It is all one event. I was asked to come over AFTER EVERYONE WAS GONE.
Also, as to Marilyn’s remark about not being part of the family that is what is the issue. My kids and I were included as part of his family since we have been together. I felt there was more to the relationship from the way he treated me and my kids.
Great Answer by Carol, but let me add that the mom left my BF with all 3 of their girls about 6 months ago to get her independance and pretty much relive her high school days from what I know. She was cheating on my BF for months before she left with a married man who she actually left the BF for and won’t keep their daughter overnight on Saturdays as that is the only nite her married man can see her. She told her older girls that they have sex all over her apt and spend the evening naked. So, my BFs daughter is living with Dad in the marital home that her mom walked out of, so the bday party is there due to the little girls’ friends and school etc.

It sounds to me like the ex still has control and as long as your BF allows her to do this she will only continue to do so.
They are over and life goes on and though he will always be this child’s father it does not mean that he has to share birthdays and holidays with the ex wife and her side of the family.
There is no reason in the world that you should be excluded from the birthday party because this is about the child’s feelings and not about her mother’s
You do good in including the child in outings, meals, and taking her trick or treating yet the mother cannot deal with you attending the birthday party?
The mother knows that you are with the ex and involved in doing things with her daughter so what is her problem?
I would somehow discover if this situation is more about your boyfriend than it is about his ex because if it is hers she needs to get over herself.
If you are still with this man a year from now hopefully you are included if there is another party given by the child’s mother?
If not I would suggest that Dad throw his own party for his daughter in his own home or else where that does not include the ex wife being part of that one.
Your boyfriend has the right to be comfortable in any situation with his own daughter and if it feels right for him to have you there beside him then it should be.
If the mother acts out I suggest that she attend some counseling for her own child’s sake because this day is not all about her.

Is it useful or pointless to find out if my ex-girlfriend’s daughter is mine?

I’m not a deadbeat by any means. First off, I don’t even know if I AM a father or not. I’ll be 20 in October. I’d appreciate a lack of prejudice for what I’m about to say. But I’m gay, I’ve known since I was a kid. But I had a girlfriend named Ebony from age 14-16, an on and off thing. Now, she’s going to be 21 in August. Ebony found out she was pregnant after we had broken up for good. But I wasn’t the only guy she was with(we were ON and Off constantly). After her daughter was born in 2008, I kind of begged her to find out who the dad is but she was too embarassed about the situation. So, I stopped pushing it. Ebony’s daughter has almost the same exact facial features as Ebony, except her skin is much lighter. Ebony is black; about as dark as Michelle Obama. I’m half Cuban and half German. But then again, I’m not the only white or Latino guy she’s been with.

Ebony and I remained friends up to this day. No hard feelings. I live in Miami but she moved to Jacksonville after she had her daughter. Yes both are in Florida but they’re NOT close AT ALL. I send her daughter gifts for her birthday and Xmas every year. Not because I’m convinced that I’m her father but I just happen to have a good heart, plus Ebony is my friend for life. I love that girl. Ebony is getting married in April. She and her fiance know for a fact that the daughter isn’t his but apparently he loves her and he’s willing to raise her. My boyfriend and I are both invited to the wedding. I can either continue to be a godfather to my POSSIBLE daughter and not bother to find out. Or I can find out and still be there for her regardless of the results. Now, honestly I’m cool with either decision. It’s not exactly eating me up inside. You know? But what would you do if you were in my shoes?

This is a hard choice to make. It seems to me Ebony doesn’t care who’s the baby’s father is as far as shes concerned shes her daughter and that’s good enough. If at 20 shes marrying a man and he loves and cares for both the girls i think shes lucky. I don’t think NOW is the best time to address this emotions run high at weddings and its bad timing. What I would do if I was you is tell your friend that if she or her daughter ever wants to run any tests you would be more then willing to. Leave the ball in her court and just always try to be supportive and good to the lil girl you might have made.

Am I greedy about gifts or is my boyfriend just a jerk?

My “boyfriend” & I have been together for almost 3 years. We are expecting a baby. For my birthday a few months ago he gave me a card that said we could have a trip anywhere – just he & I (as opposed to his kids, their friends, his mom, etc coming too). After he gave me the card he said I couldn’t really use the free trip because he was short on money. The month prior he gave his son $300 for his birthday & the month following gave his daughter $200 for her birthday.

Last Christmas he gave me a necklace in my stocking & said Christmas is for kids, not adults so I don’t get anything but a stocking stuffer from him. He eventually gave me a ring that he “forgot” he bought & had “left in his car.”

He has bragged to me about getting helicopter dates for his ex-wife, Tiffany’s jewelry for some ex-fling that he cheated on me with, spending thousands of dollars on his kids & ex-step son’s gift but hasn’t bought me one gift in almost a year. Nothing on Valentine’s, nothing on my birthday, nothing on mother’s day because even though I take care of his kids full-time I am “not their mother.” When I asked him why he’s like this he pointed out that he finally bought a stroller for “my baby” that I’m having …. and yes, it’s his baby too. He then said I can let “other men” buy me gifts if that’s what I want. I have no other man, except my ex-husband helps my 8 year old son buy my birthday & Christmas gifts, a practice I use for his dad & my boyfriend. I even gave his kids money to buy their mom’s gift because their dad was out of town for the weekend. He does not give them money to buy my gifts.

Additionally, he budgets $200-800 for his kids Christmas gifts (last year his 12 year old got a laptop) but says he will spend no more than $15 on my son because he “doesn’t need anything.” Fortunately, my son only mentioned once “I wish I had a Christmas like that!” to his kids.

Am I just a greedy b*#@ch or what? I’d love a way to come to peace with this but I don’t really plan on being with guy (for many more reasons than gifts…) much longer so should I just forget it? The whole Christmas/Mother’s Day/Valentine’s Day/Birthday thing has kinda hurt my feelings & I don’t know why….

PD Staff Answers:

There is a like golden rule for this…. Only spend 15 bucks on his kids. Only get him a stocking stuffer. But to be honest it isn’t the gifts that make you feel specail it is the way you guys fit together. In the end he is an ass for telling you about the ex and the cheated girlfriend and stuff.. It sounds like he is walking all over you.. Stop that now or when the child is born it will get worse. Stand up to him and tell him you want the gift he promised you. If he is able to buy his kids love he should be able to buy yours as well. Share the wealth.

If any of this fails. Then just start buying your self a present instead of getting one for his kids or him. They aren’t your kids in the end, they aren’t going to call you mom they will just take your gift and thats it. So get something for yourself and you kid(s).

Yes, the California DMV allows you to order personalized/ELP plates as a gift. The cost is $41 over normal registration fees. You will need to complete form REG-17 (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg17.pdf) and mail it, a copy of your registration card, and the fee, to the DMV in Sacramento (the address is on the form).

They’re expensive (about $6) compared to other cards, but we love buying the ones that are recordable so you can record your daughter saying, “You’re the best! I love you Daddy!” Use a stamp pad to have her put her handprint on the inside cover of the card and date it. If she’s working on writing her name, have her attempt that too. It’s a great keepsake for him to take to work. We did that for the grandmas for Mother’s Day.
How about having her help you cook a favorite treat? My 3 year old loves cooking. If he likes fishing, how about having her paint a bobber or pick out a fishing lure? If he’s into sports, how about going to a minor league game together?

What exactly is your father into? You also have to consider his hobbies and likes so that it’ll be easier to pick items. You can also give him some personalized gifts but make sure that it’s something different from what you gave your granddad. There are lots of gift shops online. It won’t be hard to find gifts.

Need holiday gift ideas to/from 10 month old boy, as well as holiday decorating ideas for nursery?

he loves the zoo (especially the tropical frog exhibit), music (his father plays guitar and he really seems to enjoy watching dada play), and playing outside (real nature lover, enjoys hiking with mama)

PD Staff Answers:

Ok, so I know this may sound cheesey, but whenever you are giving a gift FROM a child, you can’t go wrong with a nice picture frame and a picture of that child. Everyone loves a baby picture! Lol

You could get construction paper and cut the strips that you turn into rings (homemade garland). You can do a countdown til Christmas and let the little guy rip a ring off each day.
You can also make garland by poping a bag of popcorn, using a needle thread to string it – you can add large wooden beads to add to it’s holiday charm.
Ornaments can be made out of gingerbread. Cut out small shapes with cookie cutters and make a hole in the top where you can put a sting through.

As far as gifts go, you should definitely get him some books – but make sure they are the cardboard ones or he’s just going to rip that pages out. And maybe a little light up drum or bongo, or keyboard. Something that he can express himself with.

My 8 month old is gifted, what can I do to encourage her development?

My baby is 8 months old and gifted. I always knew that she was smart, but her doctor told me that she’s meeting milestones most kids don’t reach until they are around 18 months old and is technically ‘gifted’, at least with language. For example if you ask her if she’d like some milk yet she’ll hold out her hand and say, ‘now’. She also says, ‘hi’ in response to hi and understands not just who ‘dada‘ is, but which things belong to him and the sound of his voice on my cell phone. If I hide a toy under a blanket leave the room with her and come back an hour to ask her where the toy is she remembers and will move the blanket herself to find the toy. I’m blown away by the things she saying and doing. How can I help nurture her intelligence? Should I put her in infant music lessons or buy books for older kids or what? I really want to help with her development.
Thanks
Hey don’t be rude people. I’m just trying to be a good parent and help keep her stimulated. I’m not the one who diagnosed her as gifted, 3 doctors did that. To be honest I think it’s cool but I’m kind of intimidated because I don’t know how to help her learn.

Sorry honey, but you can not “diagnose” a child as gifted at 8 months. To be a *gifted* child, you need to take psychological tests, which CAN NOT be administered until at least the age of 5.

She is bright yes, but don’t start freaking out. Treat her as a normal 8 month old child.
